Die Release Agents in High Pressure Die Casting – Chemistry, Function, and Emerging Technologies

This course provides a focused overview of die release agents used in high pressure die casting (HPDC), emphasizing how chemistry drives performance, casting quality, and die life.

Participants will first explore the fundamental chemistry of modern release systems, including water-based emulsions, wax dispersions, and advanced silicone technologies such as modified polysiloxanes. The role of surfactants, film-forming agents, and additives in creating stable, heat-resistant barrier films will be discussed, along with how formulation impacts thermal behavior and residue characteristics.

The course then examines the core functions of die release agents in HPDC, including:

Formation of a lubricating and parting film between molten metal and die surfaces
Heat extraction and thermal management during the spray cycle
Enhancement of metal flow and surface quality
Protection of dies from soldering, erosion, and thermal fatigue

Finally, the course highlights new and emerging technologies, such as:

Low-water and micro-spray application systems to reduce thermal shock
High-performance silicone and hybrid chemistries for high-temperature stability
Environmentally driven innovations (reduced residues, improved cleanliness)
Process optimization strategies linking chemistry with spray equipment and die temperature control

By the end of the session, attendees will understand how to select, apply, and optimize die release agents to improve casting quality, extend die life, and reduce total cost of operation in modern HPDC environments.

About the Speaker

Tim Cowell
Technical Director, Hill & Griffith Company

Tim Cowell brings more than 38 years of experience in the die casting industry. A graduate of Cedarville University with a degree in Chemistry, Tim began his career at Chrysler Corporation, where he spent 12 years in chemical and metallurgical laboratory roles. During that time, he focused on integrating emerging chemical technologies into both current and next-generation manufacturing and die casting processes.

Tim has been an active contributor to industry education, serving as an instructor for multiple North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) technical courses. In recognition of his excellence in teaching, he was honored as Instructor of the Year in 2009. He has also authored several technical papers, particularly on adhesion and casting surface performance.

For the past fourteen years, Tim has served as Technical Director at Hill and Griffith, where he leads new product development, technical troubleshooting, and customer support initiatives. He currently serves as President of NADCA Chapter 25 and is an active member of both the Die Materials and R&D Committees.

Tim resides in Peru, Indiana, where he is deeply involved in his church community and enjoys spending time with his family. Outside of work, he is a passionate fan of the Chicago Bears.
