Chapter 12 - Wisconsin
Join NADCA 12 for our February Dinner Meeting at Delafield Brewhaus! Attendees will enjoy a chef-prepared pasta buffet dinner. Dr. Carl Soderhjelm will be presenting on the topic of 3D Printing of HPDC Tooling.
Carl Soderhjelm is an Assistant Research Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He is the Associate Director of the Advanced Casting Research Center (ACRC) at WPI. Carl received his M.Sc. in Nanoscience Engineering from Lund University and a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from WPI. Carl is a Foundry Educational Foundation professor and a Director for the New England American Foundry Society Chapter. His research areas are multi-material castings, molten metal cleaning, heat transfer for mold applications, and additive manufacturing for mold making applications.
Dr. Soderhjelm has been studying this topic as part of an American Metalcasting Consortium project funded by the DLA. Multiple inserts have been manufactured and put into HPDC service. Conformal cooling enabled by 3D printing is expected to increase die life, reduce porosity, and reduce soldering. The talk with give a basic overview of the 3D printing of metal, and design ideas for conformal cooling. Lessons learned from these trials will also be shared.
